About - Winter’s Grip
It was a cold, wet winter morning in Glencoe. I had been there since sunrise, but the morning had delivered very little in the way of light, and eventually I decided it was time to get out of the car, stretch my legs and make the most of being there.
Driving past, I had noticed a good level of flow in the river and decided to wander down towards the viewpoint. There was no sunlight to speak of, just a steady drizzle falling across the glen, but those subdued conditions brought their own character to the scene. With everything soaked by the rain, the colours of the landscape became deeper and more vibrant, while the lingering snow on the peaks of the Three Sisters added a beautiful touch of winter.
It’s a well-known and frequently photographed view, but sometimes it’s not about finding a new composition. It’s about seeing a familiar landscape in a different mood.
For me, it was the combination of rain, rich colour, flowing water and that light dusting of snow that gave this scene its atmosphere — a quiet, moody glimpse of Glencoe in the depths of winter
